prior to 2015, no coherent ecosystem existed for arabic graphic design. the discipline suffered from two systemic deficits:

• lack of connectivity: design projects were confined to national "islands." there was effectively no pan-arab transfer of aesthetics or critical discourse.
• imported aesthetics: the formal visual language was largely imported from the west, often ignoring local semiotic and cultural nuances, which effectively blocked the development of an authentic regional identity.

implementing a visual platform in the mena region required navigating a minefield of complex restrictions:

• aniconism and visual tradition: islamic-arabic culture is historically less centered on figurative imagery than the west. posters in this space must be encoded according to different visual laws—prioritizing typography, calligraphy, and mathematical patterns over standard photography.
• state control and censorship: in contested political systems, the public space is under heavy surveillance. the poster is viewed as a potentially dangerous tool. topics such as sexuality, religion, and systemic political critique are sanctioned by definition.
• the "eastern bloc" parallel: drawing on my polish roots, i recognized a historical parallel to the visual resistance seen in the former eastern bloc. the goal was not overt provocation, but rather the creation of a "sub-layer"—using the poster as an intellectual spark to trigger thinking without immediately tripping censorship alarms.

the most critical success factor was managing the "change" in a sensitive cultural environment. the western desire for an "image makeover" of the region often crashes into local realities.

• the fear of "fingerpointing": local actors are often aware of structural flaws but fear western condescension. direct critique of design work in many arab cultures can lead to a sudden, massive loss of face.
• the strategic workaround: to solve this ego and hierarchy problem while still maintaining high quality standards, i implemented a tactical "bypass": student works were placed in a specific, separate category.
• protected discourse spaces: by separating these, we could suddenly hold intense, heavy discussions about aesthetics and content within an internal group (around 20 experts). because it was formally "just" about student work, established designers didn't have to fear public demotion or loss of status, allowing for real intellectual honesty.

the submission and jury process revealed a systemic vulnerability that remains vital for future planning:

1. jury-dependency: the line between what is "showable" and what is "forbidden" is highly volatile and depends entirely on the courage of the decision-makers. only with a progressive jury can unconventional imagery break through.
2. future vision: the heavy, internal debates i initiated regarding image culture and self-representation need to move from small expert circles to the societal mainstream. the long-term goal is to normalize a more sovereign, self-confident visual debate throughout the middle east.
